Date & Time

If your boiler's gone down in the middle of winter, a few quick checks can sometimes get you back up and running or at least help our engineers diagnose the problem faster when you do call.

1. Check the pressure gauge. If it's reading below 1 bar, low pressure could be your whole problem. Many boilers have a filling loop that lets you safely top this up. Check your boiler's manual for instructions specific to your model.

2. Check your thermostat. Make sure it's set above room temperature and hasn't accidentally been switched to "off" or a very low setting. It sounds obvious, but it's a genuinely common cause of "no heating" call-outs.

3. Check the boiler display for an error code. Most modern boilers show a fault code when something's wrong. Note it down, this alone can save significant diagnosis time when an engineer arrives or when you call us.

4. Check your fuse box. A tripped switch or blown fuse can cut power to your boiler without any other obvious cause. Reset if needed, and see if the boiler comes back on.

5. Check for frozen condensate pipe. In particularly cold snaps, the external condensate pipe (which carries waste water away from a condensing boiler) can freeze, causing the boiler to shut down. If you can see the external pipe and safely reach it, pouring warm (not boiling) water over it can sometimes thaw it.

6. Check your oil or gas supply. If you're on oil, check your tank isn't empty. If you smell gas at any point, stop immediately don't attempt further checks, turn off your gas supply if it's safe to do so, and call the National Gas Emergency Number (0800 111 999) as well as us.

If none of this resolves it: don't keep trying things yourself, a persistent fault after these basic checks usually means a genuine repair is needed. We offer emergency boiler repair with a 3-hour response target across Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, and West Kent - call us on 07375 125565, 7 days a week.
