What to do if you have a leak

If you have a leak then the first thing you should do is turn off your water supply, finding your stopcock and turning it clockwise. Your stopcock is often under the kitchen sink – it’s useful to make sure everyone in your property knows where it is and to check it regularly to ensure it hasn’t seized up.

If for some reason you are unable to turn off your stopcock then you can instead turn off your external stop-tap, which can be found under a small cover somewhere around the boundary of your property. If you have a water meter then the external stop-tap will usually be in the same place.

Then identify the source of the leak and, if possible, turn off a valve closer to it so you can reinstate the water supply to the rest of the house.

If the water has leaked close to anything electrical (including lights) turn off your electricity supply.
