Powerflushing Explained: Signs Your Heating System Needs One

A powerflush clears years of built-up sludge, rust, and limescale debris from your entire central heating system — boiler, pipework, and radiators — restoring proper water flow and heating efficiency. Here are the clearest signs you need one.

Your radiators are patchy. If a radiator is cold at the bottom but warm at the top (or the other way round), that's usually dirty water and debris blocking proper flow. This makes radiators work harder and less effectively, using more energy to heat your home.

Your boiler cuts out or makes a banging noise. This is often "kettling" corrosion debris and limescale blocking the heat exchanger, causing pockets of steam that create the banging sound. Left unresolved, this can eventually damage the heat exchanger permanently.

Your hot water is unreliable. Running hot and cold unpredictably often points to limescale build-up in your boiler's heat exchanger, restricting the flow of hot water through your system.

Your radiators are stone cold, even with the heating on. This suggests a more serious blockage in the pipes running from your boiler the longer this is left, the more likely the blockage becomes permanent and harder (and costlier) to clear.

What the process actually involves: a powerflush uses a specialist pump and cleaning chemicals to push water at high velocity through your system, dislodging and removing built-up debris without needing to dismantle your radiators or pipework.

Why it's worth doing sooner rather than later: the longer these issues go unaddressed, the more likely you are to need a more expensive repair, a replaced heat exchanger, for example, costs considerably more than a powerflush.
